Collection of redeemable containers to help the victims of Lebanon
Environment and humanity in one gesture
Consignaction and the St-Hubert Foundation are joining forces to help victims of the disaster in Beirut by organizing an emergency collection of redeemable containers. In addition to the generous cash donations made by many Quebecers, this collection of redeemable containers a simple way to help those affected while also giving the environment a boost here at home.
The collection, themed "My Containers for Lebanon," will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 28, 29, and 30, in the parking lots of four St-Hubert restaurants in Laval and Montreal. The detailed collection schedule can be found below and on the websites of Consignaction and St-Hubertwebsites.
All proceeds from these events will be donated to the Lebanese Red Cross through the Canadian Red Cross to help victims in Lebanon. Consignaction has committed to doubling the value of donations.
"The tragedy in Lebanon has touched everyone, and in situations like this, we always wonder how we can help. Donating redeemable containers a simple way to contribute to the collective effort on the ground in Beirut. The more we participate, the more money will be raised," said Sophie Boissonneault, Director of Communications at BGE, which oversees the Consignaction program.
For example, the mobile pick-up redeemable containers up by Consignaction last spring raised $100,000 to help Quebec food banks, which translated into 300,000 meals provided to people in need.
"This initiative allows the St-Hubert Foundation to help hundreds of families affected by the disaster. We are very pleased to collaborate on this collection and to demonstrate our solidarity with the Lebanese community. Many of the victims' relatives live close to us and we want to offer them our support," said Josée Vaillancourt, Director of the Foundation.

During redeemable containers pickups, Consignaction employees will be on site to greet consumers and collect containers in accordance with public health requirements (physical distancing and personal protective equipment). For safety reasons, motorists will not have to leave their cars or come into contact with employees.
All containers collected during these special collections will be redirected into the system of deposit-refund where they will be 100% recycled. redeemable containers eligible are cans and bottles of soft drink as well as beer cans.

About Consignaction
The deposit-refund system in Quebec has been in existence since 1984. Consignaction was set up by Boissons Gazeuses Environnement (BGE) to promote and maximize the recovery of redeemable bottles and cans.
